India Sets Sights on Becoming Global Steel Hub: Kumaraswamy

Union Steel Minister HD Kumaraswamy reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making India a global hub for steel production. He stated that the country is focusing on expanding export markets while also encouraging sustainable “green steel” production.

Global oversupply, weak demand in traditional export markets, and seasonal slowdowns in construction have all weighed on India’s steel industry. To safeguard domestic producers, the government imposed a 12% provisional duty on non-alloy and alloy steel flat products for 200 days beginning April 2025. This approach has greatly reduced imports, while strict implementation of the Steel Quality Control Order has ensured that substandard steel products stay out of the Indian market.

To enhance exports, the government is implementing a multifaceted plan. The Production-Linked Incentive Scheme for Speciality Steel promotes investment in high-value products. Simultaneously, trade support programs like RoDTEP and the Market Access Initiative assist MSMEs in expanding overseas. India is also looking for chances in emerging markets such as Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, and improving port infrastructure and bilateral trade ties.

Infrastructure and housing developments boosted domestic steel demand 7.5% between April and July 2025. The government is also promoting pilot projects in hydrogen-based production and granting India’s first Green Steel Certificates.
