An increasing number of Indian students are choosing Europe over the United States for higher education, as lower tuition fees, improved mobility pathways under the India-EU trade deal, and stricter US immigration policies reshape study-abroad preferences.
Students and education consultants say countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, France, Portugal and Italy are attracting greater interest from Indian applicants. Germany, in particular, has become a preferred destination for engineering students due to its affordable education system and strong industry connections.
The shift comes as the India-EU trade agreement introduces measures to ease mobility for students and skilled professionals through simplified visa pathways, better recognition of Indian qualifications and clearer post-study work opportunities. Education consultants expect student and worker movement between India and Europe to increase significantly over the next three to five years.
Europe also offers a financial advantage, with tuition fees typically 50% to 80% lower than in the United States, with comparatively lower living costs. More universities across the continent are also expanding English-language postgraduate programmes, making Europe more accessible to international students.
However, challenges remain. Students continue to face language barriers, housing shortages in major cities, an intense job market, and uncertainty over employment prospects after graduation. Some have also expressed concerns about changing political attitudes towards immigrants in parts of Europe.
Early data already points to growing demand, with universities in the Netherlands and Italy reporting increased applications from Indian students. Education consultants say enquiries have surged since the India-EU trade deal, suggesting Europe is steadily emerging as a major alternative to traditional destinations such as the US, Canada and Australia.
