Malaysia, South Korea Expand Defence Technology and Aerospace Cooperation

Malaysia is strengthening its defence and technology partnership with South Korea, collaborating in aerospace, artificial intelligence, naval systems and advanced manufacturing, reflecting a push to modernise national defence capabilities through high-end technology sharing.

The cooperation follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed at the ASEAN Summit last year, aimed at expanding defence procurement and technology development between the two countries. Malaysian Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the partnership goes beyond equipment purchase, including technology transfer, industrial development and knowledge sharing.

Malaysia has identified South Korea as an important partner in the aerospace, surveillance, cyber defence and advanced manufacturing sectors. South Korea’s defence sector has rapidly expanded in recent years through strong investments in domestic technology and manufacturing capabilities.

The collaboration includes aerospace projects involving South Korean manufacturer Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), which is set to deliver four FA-50M light fighter jets to the Royal Malaysian Air Force in October. Discussions are underway on future cooperation in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) programmes, which would allow Malaysia to develop local technical capabilities.

South Korean defence agencies and companies are integrating artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and robotics into military operations. KAI is currently developing AI-powered unmanned aerial vehicles designed to operate alongside fighter jets in missions involving surveillance, electronic warfare and precision strikes.

South Korean shipbuilders are expanding cooperation with Malaysia. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries recently signed an agreement with Lumut Naval Shipyard to support Royal Malaysian Navy programmes through phased technology transfer to help Malaysia achieve greater self-reliance in naval vessel construction.

The growing partnership highlights Malaysia’s broader efforts to strengthen national defence through advanced technologies, local industry development and strategic international collaboration.
