India’s Jaismine Lamboria, the country’s first woman boxer to be inducted into the Indian Army, aims to win her maiden Commonwealth Games gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 24-year-old reigning world champion enters the tournament as one of India’s strongest medal contenders in the 57kg category after a breakthrough 2025 season. Lamboria won World Cup gold medals in Astana and Delhi before claiming the World Championship title in Liverpool, defeating Paris Olympic silver medallist Julia Atena Szeremeta in the final.
Having won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Lamboria said her goal in Glasgow is to change the colour of that medal to gold.
She described her first-round exit at the Paris 2024 Olympics as a turning point, saying the disappointment prompted significant physical and mental improvements during training at the Army Sports Institute (ASI) in Pune. Lamboria credited her coaches, sports psychologist and the Indian Army’s Mission Olympics Wing for helping elevate her performances.
Following her Commonwealth bronze in 2022, Lamboria became the first female boxer inducted into the Indian Army, joining the Corps of Military Police. She hopes her journey will inspire more young women to pursue boxing, especially after the Army launched its Girls Sports Company programme to develop future female athletes.
Born in Bhiwani, Haryana, often referred to as India’s “Mini Cuba” for its rich boxing tradition, Lamboria comes from a family with deep roots in the sport. She says she continues to draw inspiration from former India cricket captain MS Dhoni, whose calm approach under pressure she hopes to emulate in Glasgow.
