The world’s first high-altitude para sports complex will open in Leh, Ladakh, with the goal of providing specialised training for para-athletes in preparation for the 2028 Paralympics. The innovative effort is a collaboration between the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) in Leh and the Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF), as formalised by a Memorandum of Understanding.
This facility, designed to be inclusive and world-class, will welcome para-athletes from India and outside, providing them with a unique high-altitude setting to help them gain a competitive advantage. Indian competitors would also benefit from training with top para-athletes from around the world, which will promote excellence and international collaboration.
Advocate Tashi Gyalson, Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of Ladakh, expressed delight in Leh’s participation in building this pioneering institution, stating that it can potentially increase India’s para-sport successes. He cited India’s recent triumph at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, where Indian para-athletes won 29 medals, including seven golds.
While building is underway, AMF will identify talented children with special needs (CwSN) in the region for screening, counselling, and beginning training at AMF’s Infinity Parasports Academy in Hyderabad, Asia’s first para sports academy and rehab facility.
