Kolkata athlete Shivani Agarwalla returned home with a gold and silver medal after a successful campaign at the World Kettlebell Sport Federation (WKSF) World Championship 2026 held in Chişinău, Republic of Moldova. Representing India at the championship from June 4 to 7, Agarwalla secured her seventh world championship gold medal in the sport.
Competing in the 12-minute military snatch event, Agarwalla completed 222 repetitions with a 16kg kettlebell to win gold in the Masters category. Her performance also earned her a silver medal in the open category.
After her return to Kolkata, Agarwalla used the occasion to draw attention to the challenges faced by athletes participating in lesser-known sports in India. She expressed that the country is home to many skilled athletes having the potential to compete internationally, provided that niche sports get more recognition and support.
Agarwalla sheds light on financial difficulties faced by many competitors in non-mainstream disciplines. A chartered accountant by profession, she said her career allows her to support her sporting ambitions on her own, which many athletes are unable to continue due to a lack of resources and institutional backing.
Her journey into kettlebell sport began as a personal fitness goal after childbirth, but gradually evolved into a successful international career. Reflecting on her motivation, Agarwalla said her desire to become a strong parent helped her remain committed throughout years of training and competition.
