Indian Women’s Hockey World Cup recorded their biggest-ever winning margin by defeating South Africa 6-1.
Sunelita Toppo scored twice as India moved to the top of Pool D with four points. China also had four points, while England had three.
Toppo opened the scoring in the 11th minute after South Africa defended strongly during the early stages. Navneet Kaur doubled India’s advantage early in the second quarter.
Sushila Chanu then made it 3-0 in the 25th minute. India produced six shots and earned five penalty corners during a dominant second quarter.
Deepika extended India’s lead in the 38th minute. Lalremsiami scored six minutes later before Toppo completed her brace.
India finished with 16 shots, 25 circle entries, and six penalty corners. South Africa scored their only goal during the fourth quarter.
India also drew 2-2 with fourth-ranked China in another Pool D match. Navneet Kaur and Deepika scored for India, while Zhang Ying and Ma Ning equalised for China.
The results leave India facing crucial matches against England as they pursue a place in the tournament’s top eight.
