India outlines 2036 Olympic bid as seven countries enter IOC talks

India has unveiled its “Rising Together” vision for hosting the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, placing Ahmedabad, Gujarat, at the centre of its plans. The Indian Olympic Association released the vision on October 7, following engagement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over the previous 18 months.

India is among seven countries in preliminary discussions with the IOC about hosting the Games. The others are Germany, Qatar, Hungary, Turkey, South Africa and South Korea. The process is still at an early stage, and no host has been selected.

The IOC is expected to finalise a shortlist by March 2027, with preferred hosts due in December 2028. A final decision on the 2036 Games is anticipated in 2029.

India is seeking to strengthen its case by expanding its experience in hosting international sporting events. It has staged 36 international competitions across 15 cities since 2025 and is working towards hosting 65 by 2028.

The vision presents the Games as an opportunity to expand participation in sport and strengthen the country’s sporting infrastructure. Ahmedabad is also central to India’s longer-term plans for major international events, although its role as the proposed Olympic host remains part of an ongoing selection process.

India has never hosted the Olympic Games. Its bid will be assessed alongside those of the other countries as the IOC moves through its revised host-selection process.
