Indian women win 4x400m relay gold at Asian Games

India won the women’s 4×400-metre relay gold at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 29, finishing ahead of Bahrain and China in the final. The victory gave the country its first athletics gold of the Games.

The Indian quartet of Kiran Pahal, Machettira Poovamma, Prachi and Vithya Ramraj clocked 3:29.69 at the Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium. Bahrain finished second in 3:30.21, while China took bronze in 3:31.02.

The team stayed in contention through the early legs before Vithya Ramraj anchored the final stretch. The final-leg runner pulled away from Bahrain to secure the gold.

The result extended India’s strong record in the women’s 4x400m relay at the Asian Games. The country has now won the event at six of the last seven editions.

Vithya entered the relay final after winning bronze in the 400m hurdles earlier in the competition. She had also broken P.T. Usha’s 42-year-old national record in the event.

Prachi had already won bronze in the individual 400m at the Games. Kiran and Poovamma completed the gold-medal winning quartet.

The victory was the country’s sixth gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games and came on the same day that Neeru Dhanda won gold in the women’s trap event. India also secured bronze in the men’s 4x400m relay.

The women’s relay gold added to India’s medal tally as the country crossed the 50-medal mark during the Games.
