Canada Targets India Trade Deal by End of 2026 to Diversify Global Trade

Canada is accelerating efforts to conclude a trade agreement with India by the end of 2026 as Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks to diversify the country’s international economic relationships.

Reuters reported on October 14 that Canadian officials were working to advance negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. The effort forms part of Ottawa’s broader strategy to reduce its dependence on the United States and expand trade with other major markets.

Foreign Minister Anita Anand has highlighted the importance of strengthening commercial relationships with India, the European Union, China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Canada aims to double its non-US trade over the next decade.

Negotiations with India have gained momentum following recent exchanges between officials and ministers from both countries. Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have also discussed bilateral ties, with Modi expected to visit Canada in December.

The proposed agreement is intended to expand market access and create opportunities for businesses in both countries. Bilateral trade stood at US$ 30.4 billion in 2025, and the stated target is US$ 70 billion annually by 2030.

However, reaching a deal will require progress on the outstanding terms of the negotiations. The two governments must still agree on the scope and conditions of any final agreement.
