The Union Cabinet has approved two new semiconductor projects with a combined investment of Rs. 3,936 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), further expanding the country’s efforts to build a self-reliant electronics and chip manufacturing ecosystem. The projects include India’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display manufacturing facility based on Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology and a semiconductor packaging unit.
Both facilities will be established in Gujarat and are expected to strengthen India’s position in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. Officials said the latest approvals increase the total number of sanctioned semiconductor projects under the ISM initiative to 12. The projects are aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported semiconductor components while boosting domestic technological capabilities.
The India Semiconductor Mission has emerged as a key pillar of the government’s broader strategy to transform India into a global electronics manufacturing hub. The newly approved units are expected to support innovation in display technologies and semiconductor packaging, both of which are crucial for consumer electronics, automotive systems, telecommunications, and emerging digital technologies. Industry experts believe the expansion of semiconductor infrastructure could help attract additional global investments into India’s electronics sector in the coming years.
