India and the United States discussed ways to strengthen cooperation around the artificial intelligence economy during a high-level roundtable held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 22. The meeting was titled “US India Partnership: Powering the AI Economy”.
The roundtable was organised by the Consulate General of India in New York in partnership with ReNew and the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum. More than 40 participants from industry, academia, investment, government and civil society took part.
Discussions focused on expanding investment in data centres and AI infrastructure across the US-India corridor. Participants also examined the need for reliable power supply and grid readiness as demand from AI systems grows.
The meeting also looked at ways to mobilise public, private and blended capital for cross-border energy and digital infrastructure. Participants discussed policy, regulatory and technology frameworks that could support closer bilateral cooperation.
The roundtable included senior representatives from both countries and other institutions. Participants included Indian renewable energy ministry secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi, USISPF President and CEO Mukesh Aghi, World Bank Executive Director Neelkanth Mishra and ReNew Chairman and CEO Sumant Sinha.
A report titled Powering the AI Age: India’s Next Energy Export Opportunity was also launched during the meeting. The report examines India’s potential role in meeting the energy requirements of the expanding AI economy.
The discussions come as governments and companies assess the infrastructure needed to support rapid growth in AI computing and data centres.
