India`s innovation engine is unstoppable: Piyush Goyal as patent filings hit record high in FY26

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has hailed India’s innovation ecosystem as “unstoppable” after patent filings reached a record high in the financial year 2025–26. According to official data, total patent applications rose to over 1.43 lakh, marking a significant 30.2 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

The surge reflects a steady upward trend in India’s intellectual property activity, with filings increasing consistently over recent years. Domestic applicants accounted for more than 69 per cent of total filings, highlighting the growing role of Indian innovators, including startups, MSMEs, and academic institutions.

Goyal noted that the rise in patent activity demonstrates India’s transformation into a global innovation hub. He attributed the growth to supportive government initiatives, digitalisation of processes, and increased awareness about intellectual property rights. Nearly 95 per cent of patent applications are now filed online, indicating improved efficiency in the system.

India is now ranked among the top patent filers globally, with states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra leading contributions. The development underscores a shift from “Made in India” to “Invented in India,” positioning the country as a key player in global research and innovation.
