MBZ’s India visit: PM Modi receives UAE president at airport; signs pacts on energy, nuclear reactor, space

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday personally received UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the airport in New Delhi, underscoring the exceptional warmth of India-UAE relations as the visiting leader arrived for a brief yet high-level official visit. Describing the UAE President as his “brother,” PM Modi said the visit reflected the importance Sheikh Mohamed attaches to the India-UAE friendship. The Prime Minister later hosted President Nahyan and his family at Lok Kalyan Marg, where traditional Indian hospitality was extended through symbolic cultural gifts.

PM Modi presented a hand-carved wooden jhula from Gujarat, symbolising togetherness and family bonds, aligning with the UAE’s declaration of 2026 as the Year of Family. Kashmiri Pashmina shawls and saffron, showcasing India’s rich handloom heritage, were also gifted to the visiting dignitaries.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, talks between the two leaders extended well beyond the scheduled time and were described as substantive. Discussions covered bilateral, regional, and global issues, with a strong focus on advancing the India-UAE strategic partnership. The leaders reviewed progress under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and agreed to raise bilateral trade to $200 billion by 2032. Cooperation in advanced nuclear technologies, artificial intelligence, data centres, and space was discussed, along with exploring a digital or data embassy.

The UAE President was accompanied by a high-powered delegation, reflecting the significance of the visit. Both sides also agreed to establish a “House of India” in Abu Dhabi, envisioned as a lasting cultural symbol of the partnership.
