Piyush Goyal unveils Agra: World Capital of Footwear campaign ahead of India, New Zealand FTA deal

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal unveiled the “Agra: World Capital of Footwear” campaign, positioning the historic city as a global manufacturing and export hub. The initiative comes at a strategic time as India advances negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with New Zealand, aiming to boost bilateral trade and open new markets for Indian products.

Agra, long known for its leather and footwear industry, contributes significantly to India’s exports in this sector. The campaign seeks to modernize the industry through branding, innovation, and improved global outreach while supporting local artisans and manufacturers. Officials highlighted that the initiative will also generate employment and strengthen MSMEs in the region.

The timing aligns with India’s broader push to expand export capabilities under various trade agreements. The proposed FTA with New Zealand is expected to reduce tariffs and facilitate smoother trade flows, especially in sectors like leather goods, textiles, and agriculture.

By promoting Agra as a global footwear destination, the government aims to enhance India’s competitiveness and reinforce its presence in international markets. The campaign reflects a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern trade strategy.
