Yamal, aged 17 years and one day, became the youngest player to compete in a Euro or World Cup final. With the help of crucial saves and a goal-line clearance by Dani Olmo, Spain’s defence, under the command of Unai Simón, held firm against England’s late surge.

England, despite their extraordinary tenacity, fell just short but showed promise for the future, with Gareth Southgate naming Spain as the best team in the competition.
