Malaysia has recorded strong growth in its medical tourism sector as foreign patient arrivals and healthcare revenues continue to surge, particularly in regions such as Penang. Industry reports show that the country attracted nearly 1.84 million international patients in 2025, generating over RM3.3 billion in revenue and strengthening Malaysia’s position as a leading healthcare destination in Asia.
Officials attribute the increase to Malaysia’s affordable treatment costs, advanced private healthcare infrastructure, shorter waiting times, and improved international connectivity. Penang, one of the country’s major medical tourism hubs, reported medical tourism revenue of over RM1.1 billion through its private hospitals, reflecting growing demand from regional and international patients.
Malaysia’s healthcare tourism industry has also benefited from visa reforms and easier travel policies introduced to encourage international visitors. Analysts say the country is increasingly attracting patients seeking specialised treatments in cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, and fertility care.
With demand continuing to rise, Malaysia is expected to further expand healthcare investments and strengthen partnerships between hospitals, tourism authorities, and travel operators to enhance its global competitiveness in the medical tourism sector.
