BrahMos deal in focus as Rajnath gets ready to visit Vietnam

A potential deal for India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system is expected to dominate discussions as Defence Minister Rajnath Singh prepares for key engagements with Vietnam amid growing defence cooperation between the two countries. Reports indicate that negotiations for the missile deal have reached an advanced stage and could be valued at nearly $630 million, including training and logistical support for Vietnamese forces.

India has been expanding defence exports under its “Act East” policy, with the BrahMos missile already supplied to the Philippines and agreements finalised with Indonesia earlier this year. Strategic analysts view the possible Vietnam deal as significant in strengthening regional security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific amid increasing Chinese influence in the South China Sea.

The growing India-Vietnam partnership also includes maritime security cooperation, military training, and defence technology collaboration. Bilateral trade between the two nations has crossed $16 billion, while both sides continue to enhance diplomatic and strategic coordination.

Officials have not confirmed whether the missile agreement will be formally signed immediately, but discussions are expected to remain a major focus during the high-level engagements.
