Jal Shakti likely to sign MoU to strengthen satellite-based applications for water resource assessment

The Indian Space Research Organisation and India’s Ministry of Jal Shakti are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing the use of satellite technology for water resource assessment and management across the country. The proposed collaboration seeks to leverage India’s growing space capabilities to improve monitoring, planning and conservation of water resources.

Under the partnership, satellite imagery and geospatial technologies are expected to be used for mapping rivers, reservoirs, groundwater resources, watersheds and irrigation networks. Such data can provide policymakers and administrators with real-time insights into water availability, usage patterns and environmental changes.

Officials believe that integrating satellite-based observations with conventional hydrological assessments will improve decision-making and support sustainable water management strategies. The initiative is also expected to aid drought monitoring, flood forecasting and climate resilience planning, particularly in water-stressed regions.

India has increasingly relied on space-based applications for agriculture, disaster management and environmental monitoring. The proposed ISRO-Jal Shakti collaboration reflects a broader effort to apply advanced technologies to developmental challenges. Experts note that accurate and timely data will be crucial for ensuring long-term water security as population growth, urbanisation and climate change place increasing pressure on the country’s water resources.
