Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with the ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ title by Seychelles on Sunday for his leadership in environmental conservation, climate resilience and support for the aspirations of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The honour, presented by Seychelles President Patrick Herminie in Victoria, marks the first time the island nation has bestowed the title. It also becomes the 34th international honour conferred upon Prime Minister Modi by a foreign country.
Accepting the recognition, Modi expressed gratitude to the people and government of Seychelles and to countries working collectively to combat climate change and protect the environment for future generations.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to build a sustainable, greener future, highlighting initiatives such as Mission LiFE, the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, the International Big Cat Alliance and the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign as examples of the country’s efforts towards environmental sustainability.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Presidential Distinction recognises Modi’s efforts to promote sustainable development, advance the blue economy, strengthen climate resilience, and support the interests of Small Island Developing States.
At the ceremony, President Herminie described the honour as a symbol of Seychelles’ deepest respect for leaders whose vision and partnership embody the spirit of protecting the nation’s “Blue Horizon.”
Modi, on a three-day visit to Seychelles, will hold bilateral talks with President Herminie and attend the country’s Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour.
The recognition comes weeks after the Prime Minister was awarded Slovakia’s highest civilian honour, the Order of the White Double Cross (First Class), during his visit to Bratislava.
