Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Sunday said yoga has become the world’s largest community celebration, bringing people together across countries and cultures while promoting health, well-being and harmony.
Addressing the people on International Yoga Day in Kolkata, Modi said June 21 has become a symbol of global unity through yoga. 35,000 people participated in the city’s Red Road. He describes connection and togetherness as the true essence of the ancient practice.
The Prime Minister recalled that India had proposed the idea of Yoga International Day at the United Nations in 2014, following which the UN officially recognised June 21 as the day, celebrated annually worldwide.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, Modi said it plays an important role in promoting physical health, mental well-being and active ageing. He added that the practice encourages people to understand their bodies and minds while maintaining flexibility, energy and overall fitness throughout life.
The Prime Minister urged people to make yoga a regular part of their daily routine rather than it be an annual event. He said the benefits of yoga extend beyond physical exercise and contribute to long-term health and quality of life.
He expressed gratitude to the people of Kolkata for hosting the celebrations and acknowledged the citywide cleanliness drive organised alongside the event.
The celebrations marked one of the largest International Yoga Day gatherings in the country, reflecting the global popularity of yoga and its role in promoting healthier lifestyles.
