PM Modi Congratulates Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed on Election Victory

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and the ruling Prosperity Party on their victory in Ethiopia’s parliamentary elections, reaffirming India’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with the East African nation.

In a message shared on social media. He described India’s relationship as historic, multifaceted, and deeply rooted, expressing his eagerness to continue working closely with the Ethiopian leadership to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The message came after Ethiopia’s National Election Board announced that the Prosperity Party had secured 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives during the country’s seventh General Election held on June 1. The victory paves the way for the party to form a new government under Ethiopia’s constitutional framework.

Modi also recalled his visit to Ethiopia last year, helping strengthen bilateral ties. During the visit, India expressed its willingness to expand cooperation in areas such as Digital Public Infrastructure, mining, critical minerals, clean energy, agriculture, and food security.

The two countries also reviewed progress in trade and investment, innovation and technology, education, and capacity building. India remains one of Ethiopia’s important economic partners, with Indian companies investing more than US$5 billion in sectors including manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, creating over 75,000 local jobs.

During his visit, Modi also addressed a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, underscoring the growing importance of India-Ethiopia relations and the shared commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
