Qatar clinched a thrilling 3-2 win over Iran in the Asian Cup semi-final, securing a spot in the final against Jordan. The match unfolded with remarkable intensity as Qatar retaliated to Sardar Azmoun’s stunning opener with goals from Jassem Gaber and Akram Afif.

Vinesh Phogat, 29, a gold medalist at the Asian Games, won the 55kg gold medal at the Senior National Wrestling Championships.

Representing the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), Phogat defeated her opponent from Madhya Pradesh, Jyoti, with a convincing 4-0 victory. Her remarkable track record includes clinching gold in the 50kg category at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and winning in the 53kg category at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

New Jersey is set to host the grand finale of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the finale of a tournament spanning three nations and featuring a total of 104 matches.

The United States, Mexico, and Canada will jointly host the event, with the inaugural match slated for June 11, 2026, at Mexico City’s historic Estadio Azteca.

FIFA announced that the finale of the 2026 World Cup, along with its comprehensive schedule, will unfold in New Jersey, home to the esteemed New York Giants and New York Jets of the National Football League. The collaborative effort of the United States, Canada, and Mexico in hosting the 48-team World Cup will culminate on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Canada will host 13 matches, with Toronto and Vancouver each hosting ten group-stage games, while Mexico is slated to host 13 matches, including ten in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey during the initial group phase.

The tournament’s remaining events will take place in eleven cities across the United States. Inaugural matches for the national teams of the host countries will occur in Toronto, Mexico City, and Los Angeles. MetLife Stadium, boasting a capacity of 82,500 seats, previously hosted the 2016 Copa America Centenario final.

Indian boxer Mandeep Jangra creates history by winning the US-based National Boxing Association’s (NBA) intercontinental super featherweight title. He defeated American boxer Gerardo Esquivel in a one-sided manner in Toppenish City, Washington.

To compete for the title on January 26, Friday, Jangra dropped down from his previous 75kg weight class. He left his mark on the professional scene with six incredible victories, of which four were stunning knockouts that sent shockwaves around the boxing community.

Jangra said, “This victory is not just mine but that of every person who has supported me throughout the journey. My coaches, family, fans, etc. stood with me. I dedicate this title to my country.” He further added that he will try to keep winning similar respect and titles for his country.

The 30-year-old is an undefeated professional who hails from Kharian in Haryana’s Sirsa district and made his debut in 2021. Akhil Kumar, an Indian boxer, is his mentor, and the Anglian Medal Hunt Company is supporting him. After his third professional fight, he was trained under former Olympic silver medalist Roy Jones Jr.

In 2013 and 2014, Jangra won silver medals at the Asian Championship and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, respectively. He also has a decent run on the amateur circuit.

On Sunday, the Democratic Republic of Congo secured an incredible 8-7 win at the Africa Cup of Nations last-16 in San Pedro. Congo claimed the win after Egypt’s goalkeeper, Mohamed Abou Gabal, missed his penalty in the shootout.

Abou Gabal’s shot struck the crossbar, and his opposite number, Lionel Mpasi, scored against him. The Congolese celebrated the victory, as they will now play Guinea in the quarterfinals on Friday in Abidjan.

Meschack Elia almost scored on the goal line to give DR Congo the advantage early in the match. Meanwhile, Mostafa Mohamed’s fourth goal of the competition, scored from the penalty spot just before halftime, cut the lead to just nine minutes. Salah ceased attacking and managed to hold on as the match proceeded to a shootout after Egypt midfielder Mohamed Hamdy was sent off in extra time. The shootout ended with Egypt emerging victorious.

The Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna made history by becoming the oldest person to reach the No. 1 spot in men’s doubles tennis at the age of 43. Following his recent win against sixth-seed pair Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni at the Australian Open, Bopanna’s ranking on the global stage has escalated.

His partnership with Australian partner Mathew Ebden has secured him a spot in the semi-finals at the Australian Open. The duo showcased a spectacular game with their coordination, not losing a single serve in the opening set and sealing a 6-4, 7-6(5) win.

Since reaching the final of the 2023 US Open and winning titles at the Qatar Open and the Indian Wells tournament, the two have been seen as a strong pair. He became the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion at the Indian Wells tournament.

Bopanna’s latest feet have created history by becoming the oldest first-time World No. 1 in the ATP men’s doubles ranking. Mike Bryan, the previous oldest men’s doubles No. 1, was 41 years and 76 days old when his streak ended in 2019.

After his win, Bopanna said that his achievements would encourage people to view those over 40 in a different light.
