The first shipment of maize from Krishnapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh to Vietnam was officially flagged off this week, marking a significant milestone for agricultural exports from the region. The export initiative is expected to provide better market access and improved prices for maize farmers in the Nellore district and nearby areas.
District Collector Himanshu Shukla and Adani Krishnapatnam Port CEO Jagdish Patel jointly inaugurated the export operation. The vessel, MV Parvaraj, departed carrying more than 53,000 metric tonnes of maize bound for Vietnamese markets. Officials stated that the shipment was facilitated after a bumper maize harvest raised concerns about falling local prices due to surplus production.
To support farmers, the district administration coordinated with the Agriculture Department and port authorities to streamline logistics and export procedures. Authorities believe the initiative will help farmers secure remunerative prices while also strengthening India’s agricultural trade ties with Southeast Asian countries.
The export is also expected to enhance the strategic role of Krishnapatnam Port as a major gateway for agri-exports from southern India. Industry observers say increasing overseas demand for Indian maize could open additional export opportunities in international markets in the coming months.
