Four semiconductor plants to be ready in India this year, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that four semiconductor plants are expected to become operational in India during 2026, marking a major step in the country’s efforts to build a self-reliant electronics manufacturing ecosystem. The announcement was made during the inauguration of Kaynes Semicon’s OSAT facility in Sanand, Gujarat, where the minister highlighted India’s rapidly expanding semiconductor roadmap.

According to Vaishnaw, two semiconductor plants have already been inaugurated in Sanand, including facilities associated with Micron Technology, while additional projects are scheduled to begin operations later this year. He also stated that two more semiconductor plants are planned for 2027, and India’s first semiconductor fabrication unit is expected to become operational in Dholera by 2028.

The developments are part of the government’s broader strategy to position India as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub amid rising global demand for chips. The sector has received strong policy support through incentives under the Semicon India programme and increasing investments from international technology firms. Officials believe the new plants will strengthen domestic supply chains, create employment opportunities, and reduce dependence on imports in critical technology sectors.
