India and Malaysia to Deepen Ties in Semiconductor Sector

India and Malaysia are set to strengthen collaboration in the semiconductor industry, which has been highlighted as a key pillar of the two countries’ future economic partnership. Malaysian Deputy Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong stated at the recent India-ASEAN Strategic Dialogue that both countries’ semiconductor ecosystems complement one another, providing chances to create a resilient and mutually beneficial supply chain.

Liew emphasised that Malaysia wants to be a part of India’s semiconductor growth narrative and sees huge opportunities in joint ventures and technological partnerships. He also mentioned that B.N. Reddy, the Indian High Commissioner in Malaysia, is working to establish a memorandum of cooperation on semiconductors, which will formalise bilateral engagement in this critical sector.

Malaysia, with its large industrial base and skills in chip assembly, testing, and packaging, might become a vital partner for India’s semiconductor ambitions. This comes as India boosts incentives for chip design and manufacture as part of its national semiconductor mission.

Liew also urged ASEAN members to strengthen engagement with major economies such as India, China, and the United States at both the federal and state levels.
