India Crosses 2 Lakh Startup Milestone, Innovation Momentum to Drive Growth: Piyush Goyal

India has reached a significant milestone in its startup journey, with the number of government-recognized firms now exceeding two lakh, according to Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. He praised the achievement as a reflection of India’s strong innovation culture, expressing confidence that this momentum will continue to fuel economic growth in the coming year. More than 44,000 firms were recognised this year alone, the highest annual total since the Startup India initiative’s launch in 2016.

The increasing ecosystem has had a tremendous impact on job creation, with acknowledged startups producing over 21 lakh direct jobs across industries. A notable trend is the increased participation of women, with nearly half of these firms having at least one female director or partner. Government support has been key to this expansion, with targeted funding and credit schemes improving access to finance for early-stage ventures.

Startups are also strengthening their market presence by filing thousands of patent applications and engaging in government procurement platforms. According to Goyal, this steady increase in entrepreneurship is consistent with India’s broader vision for building a self-reliant and advanced economy based on innovation and enterprise.
