India delivered a commanding performance at the inaugural World Yogasana Championships 2026, finishing first on the podium with an extraordinary 114 medals, including 102 gold medals, as the event concluded in Ahmedabad. The dominant display underlined India’s strong global position in Yogasana, marking a major milestone for the sport on the international stage.
Hosts India completely outclassed the competition at the five-day championship held at the EKA Arena. Japan finished second with three gold, three silver, and five bronze medals; Argentina clinched third place owing to the outstanding performance of athlete Nabila Barraza, who brought home two gold and three silver medals.
The championship witnessed participation from 522 athletes representing 79 countries, with 31 nations winning at least one medal and 10 countries securing at least one gold medal. India fielded a 122-member contingent competing across six age categories ranging from sub-junior to senior divisions.
Nepal emerged as one of the top-performing nations in terms of overall medals, securing 52 medals, while Uzbekistan secured 25 during the competition. The event received backing from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, the Ministry of Ayush, the Sports Authority of India, Gujarat Tourism, and various other organisations dedicated to promoting Yogasana as a competitive sport globally. The inaugural championship is seen as a crucial milestone in boosting the international profile of yogasana, paving the way for its long-term recognition in the global sports arena.
