India’s total solar photovoltaic (PV) potential is 3,343.37 GWp, according to new research released by Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi. The study highlights the country’s numerous opportunities to increase its renewable energy capacity and advance its green energy goals.
The report, Solar PV Assessment in India (Ground Mounted), was released at the start of a training program on solar cell and module manufacture conducted by the National Institute of Solar Energy and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Minister Joshi emphasised the importance of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the study. ISRO leveraged high-resolution satellite geospatial data to analyse land use and identify wastelands ideal for solar development. The study considers factors like land slope, aspect, solar exposure, and proximity to roads, power infrastructure, substations, and evacuation routes.
The analysis, described as the most comprehensive report on India’s ground-mounted solar potential, provides crucial insights for state agencies, helping them plan green energy corridors and design targeted policies. Investors can also benefit from a mapped overview of opportunities, which reduces risk and promotes confident project development.
