Indian music duo Colonial Cousins has returned to the spotlight after presenting their latest vinyl album, Krishna, to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia.
Comprising legendary singer Hariharan and composer-singer Lesle Lewis, Colonial Cousins is widely regarded as one of India’s most influential fusion acts. The duo pioneered the blend of Indian classical music with Western genres such as pop, rock, and jazz, helping popularise Indian fusion music globally.
Formed in the 1990s, Colonial Cousins rose to prominence with their self-titled debut album, which featured hit songs including Krishna, Sa Ni Dha Pa, and Indian Rain. Their innovation earned them international recognition and contributed to the growing popularity of Indian independent music.
Their latest album, Krishna, was gifted to Albanese as a cultural gesture highlighting the enduring artistic ties between India and Australia. The presentation took place during Modi’s engagements in Melbourne, where the Prime Minister met members of the Indian diaspora and held bilateral talks with the Australian leader.
Over the years, Hariharan has built a celebrated career in Indian playback music and ghazals, while Lesle Lewis has established himself as one of India’s leading music composers and producers. Together, they created a distinctive musical identity that continues to inspire generations of artists.
With a career spanning more than three decades, Colonial Cousins remain one of the defining names in Indian fusion music, successfully bridging classical traditions with contemporary global sounds.
