Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a large gathering at the Changlimethang Celebration Ground in Thimphu, reaffirming India’s strong and time-tested relationship with Bhutan. During his two-day visit, PM Modi attended the Global Peace Prayer Festival, which was held to commemorate the 70th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, as well as the exhibition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India.
He extended warm greetings to the Bhutanese monarchy and congratulated the Fourth King for creating Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness-based development model, which has inspired nations around the world.
PM Modi recalled India’s ancient belief in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, stating that both countries are guided by similar spiritual and cultural values. He reaffirmed India’s solidarity with Bhutan’s peace efforts and pledged support for future connectivity initiatives, like rail links from Gelephu and Samtse to India.
PM Modi also praised Bhutan’s achievement as the world’s first carbon-negative nation, as well as its achievements in renewable energy. He announced India’s support in hydropower and solar projects, including a ₹10,000 crore development package.
PM Modi concluded his speech by emphasising India and Bhutan’s shared emotions, values, and culture, promising a future of peace, prosperity, and mutual progress.
