Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Accra, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in nearly three decades. President John Dramani Mahama welcomed him with a ceremonial guard of honour, and members of the Indian community gathered to meet him with traditional chanting, highlighting the two countries’ close cultural links.
During the visit, India and Ghana signed four MoUs to promote collaboration in culture, traditional medicine, Ayurveda, institutional assistance, and standardisation processes.
The leaders addressed ways to boost trade and investment, with PM Modi pointing out that bilateral trade has surpassed USD 3 billion and that Indian investments support around 900 projects in Ghana, totalling approximately USD 2 billion. Both countries intend to quadruple trade within five years, demonstrating their commitment to greater economic engagement.
PM Modi also offered to share India’s UPI digital payments system with Ghana to boost its fintech projects and promote digital financial inclusion.
On security, the leaders resolved to strengthen cooperation in counter-terrorism, cyber security, defence training, and marine security, identifying terrorism as a shared threat to humanity. The visit demonstrated India’s commitment to strengthening ties with African countries while also promoting mutual progress and regional stability.
