Mirabai Chanu Creates History With Third Straight Commonwealth Games Gold 

Mirabai Chanu secured India’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, producing a record-breaking performance in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event.

The 31-year-old lifted a 190kg total, setting new Commonwealth Games records with 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk. The victory earned Mirabai her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, having previously won the title in 2018 and 2022.

President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mirabai on her achievement. President Murmu praised her exceptional grit and determination, while the Vice President commended her resilience and consistent excellence. Prime Minister Modi described the triumph as another glorious chapter in Indian weightlifting and hailed her as an inspiration.

India added two more silver medals in weightlifting. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh finished second in the men’s 60kg category with a total lift of 264kg, equalling the Commonwealth Games snatch record with 121kg before lifting 143kg in the clean and jerk.

Raja Muthupandi also claimed silver in the men’s 65kg event with a combined lift of 286kg, comprising 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk. Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin won the gold with a record total of 299kg.

India also enjoyed success in boxing, with Jadumani Singh advancing to the men’s 55kg quarter-finals after defeating Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman, with Preeti Pawar progressing to the women’s 54kg quarter-finals with a win over Deborah Mtenje from Malawi.

India’s medal tally now stands at four medals, one gold, two silver and one bronze.
