Kazakhstan’s Economic Overhaul Sparks Enthusiasm Among Indian Investors

On May 10, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan signed economic changes with the aim of increasing investment opportunities, competition, and entrepreneurship, especially for Indian investors eyeing the region. A National Privatisation Office, improved corporate governance for the Samruk Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund, and increased competition in product marketplaces are some of the measures.

To facilitate digitization and optimise company processes, regulatory policies will be streamlined. Decriminalisation of some offences is one of the measures put in place to safeguard the rights of businesses. It is anticipated that these reforms will lessen the influence of government in the economy, improving conditions for private industry.

A liberalised economic climate and fair competition are what Indian investors are looking for in Central Asia, where Kazakhstan has the largest and most advanced economy in the area. India’s principal trading and investment partner in Central Asia is Kazakhstan, supported by programmes such as the Joint Business Council (JBC), founded by FICCI, and the Kazakhstan Chamber of International Commerce.

Kazakhstan is an attractive location for Indian companies wishing to increase their footprint because there are plenty of investment opportunities in industries including infrastructure, energy, IT, healthcare, and hospitality.

Due to their increased efforts in their respective semiconductor sectors, China and the US will face more rivalry as a result of South Korea’s ambitions. Notably, South Korea has started large-scale initiatives such as fabless industry-only zones and a semiconductor megacluster.

With these initiatives, South Korea hopes to increase its share of the global non-memory chip market and generate nearly 3 million new employment opportunities within the semiconductor industry.

Praggnanandhaa Beats Carlsen But Remains Third In Superbet Chess

In the Superbet rapid and blitz chess tournament, Wei Yi of China increased his lead by a significant 2.5 points, while R. Praggnanandhaa of India scored another impressive win over Magnus Carlsen.

On the first day of the blitz, Yi scored seven victories and an amazing 20.5 points, putting him in the lead to win the first leg of the Grand Chess Tour. With only eighteen points, Carlsen is well behind, mainly because Praggnanandhaa keeps winning against him.

A fierce competition for the crown is anticipated as Praggnanandhaa maintains a solid 14.5 points.

Arjun Erigaisi (14 points) and Duda Jan-Krzysztof (13 points) are not far behind. With 12.5 points, Nodirbek Abdusattorov is in sixth place. Carlsen’s claim that his nervous system gave out after his defeat by Praggnanandhaa serves to further emphasise the tension of the situation.

Wei Yi only gave up a draw to Carlsen throughout the day after coming back from a defeat to Gukesh. Unfortunately, Gukesh had difficulties and only managed to get 2.5 points. Arjun continued to be a strong competitor, winning matches against Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa.

With 20.5 points, Wei Yi continues to lead the quick segment, ahead of Carlsen (18), Praggnanandhaa (14.5), and Arjun Erigaisi (14.5).

France’s Periault Wins Gold At Yokohoma To Secure An Olympic Berth

France’s Leonie Periault triumphed at the Yokohama World Triathlon Championship Series, securing her Olympic spot with a commanding win. Periault finished 36 seconds in front of American competitor Taylor Knibb in second place and 40 seconds ahead of fellow Frenchwoman Emma Lombardi, who took home the bronze.

In the series, 29-year-old Periault won her second gold medal of her career with a winning time of 01:52:28. She and 22-year-old Lombardi will proudly represent France at the next Games.

Knibb had already guaranteed her place after finishing in the top eight of the Paris test event the previous year. Kirsten Kasper took fifth, but Taylor Spivey was unable to qualify for the Olympics after finishing in fourth place.

Double world champion Gwen Jorgensen placed fifteenth, while Flora Duffy, the current Olympic champion, miraculously recovered from an injury to take seventh place.

Knibb moved quickly through the water, and Duffy fought through the cycling part even after Maya Kingma had a puncture. However, Periault’s unmatched performance on the track was what really won her the race; Lombardi managed to keep up the longest before eventually losing ground.

Tabilo Beats Djokovic In A Huge Upset At The Italian Open

Alejandro Tabilo of Chile stunned world number one Novak Djokovic with a stunning 6-2, 6-3 victory in just 67 minutes to secure a career-defining win at the Italian Open. Following a water bottle blow to the head two days earlier, six-time tournament champion Djokovic appeared off balance.

Tabilo took advantage of Djokovic’s out-of-character performance, breaking him four times while preserving an unbreakable defence and not giving up a break point.

After Fernando Gonzalez defeated Roger Federer in 2007, Tabilo became the first Chilean to defeat the world’s top player. Tabilo, who ranked 32nd overall, expressed shock and joy at the accomplishment and called the experience “unreal.”

Djokovic hasn’t made it to a single final this year, so this setback adds to a streak of unsatisfactory performances in 2024. There are questions over the Serbian’s form going into the French Open due to his troubles on clay courts.

Djokovic made it to the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals, but his early withdrawal in Rome raises questions about whether he will be ready for Roland Garros, which hosts the second Grand Slam event of the year on May 26.

India Is Now The World’s Third-Largest Producer Of Solar Power

India surpassed Japan to become the third-largest generator of solar electricity globally in 2023 as a result of its rapid deployment. Following the global trend of solar energy growth, 5.8% of India’s electricity came from solar energy in 2023, up from 0.5% in 2015.

According to Ember’s report, solar power has outpaced coal as the fastest-growing electricity source globally for the 19th year. In terms of the increase in solar generation worldwide in 2023, India ranked fourth. 75% of this growth came from the top four nations, which are Brazil, the US, China, and the US.

Globally, solar generation in 2023 will be over six times larger than in 2015. According to the International Energy Agency, solar energy is expected to generate 22% of the world’s electricity by 2030.

India needs to move faster towards greener energy sources because the country generates roughly half of its yearly carbon emissions from the production of electricity. As part of its climate change policy, India wants to see 50% of its electricity capacity come from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.

Leaders from around the world met at COP28 to commit to tripling the world’s renewable energy capacity by 2030, which is essential to keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

India In Talks With Like-Minded Countries To Regulate Tourism In Antarctica

India and its allies aim to regulate tourism in the Antarctic due to growing worries about its impact on the environment. The 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Conference (ATCM) and the 26th Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) conference, which are both focused on this issue, will be held in Kochi, Kerala, from May 20 to May 30, at the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ravichandran, emphasised the pressing need for regulation and outlined the difficulties associated with uncontrolled tourism. India suggests more stringent regulations to protect the fragile ecosystem in the area, including the establishment of criteria for travellers to Antarctica.

In order to assist in continuing scientific efforts, India runs two research stations in Antarctica: Maitri and Bharati. The government provides these bases with yearly maintenance funding of about Rs 150–200 crore, which guarantees careful maintenance and garbage disposal.

Since its inception in the 1950s, thousands of people have been to the Antarctic each year as a result of a tourism surge. For the 2022–2023 season, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) released several significant figures.

India and its allies are working to encourage environmentally conscious travel to Antarctica, with a focus on limited access and protection.
