18-Year-Old Prakhar Breaks Yuvraj Singh’s 24-Year-Old Record

On Monday, Karnataka batter Prakhar Chaturvedi broke Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s 24-year-old record. Chaturvedi scored 404 runs in 636 balls in the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy final against Mumbai. He outshined Singh’s 1999 record of 358 runs for Punjab against Bihar, and interestingly, MS Dhoni was part of the Bihar team. Singh held the record for the highest individual score for more than twenty years.

The BCCI appreciated the 18-year-old’s smashing record on their official account X. He smashed 46 fours and three sixes, which helped the team earn 890 for eight in reply to Mumbai’s 380. He opened the inning and played the unbeaten inning, staying at the crease for 885 minutes.

Chaturvedi was not selected for the Under-19 team this season. However, he emerged as another addition to India’s talent in cricket. With his massive win, he now has a chance to play for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy as a member of the senior team.

In an interview, he said that breaking Singh’s records feels ununbelievable; he is proud and is beyond words. Meanwhile, Yuvraj Singh also praised Chaturvedi and said that records were meant to be broken. He added that he is happy to see that the future of Indian cricket is in safe hands.

Lionel Messi and Aitana Bonamati Were Crowned As The Best Players For 2023 In Men and Women Category

On Monday, January 15, Argentina World Cup winner Lionel Messi enjoyed another major win by clinching FIFA’s best men’s player for 2023 by defeating rivals Erling Haaland of Norway and Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain. It was Messi’s third win in the last four years. In October, he added the Ballon d’Or to his list of individual accolades.

Since Haaland had a higher chance of winning the award, Messi was absent for the controversial award. Arsenal and France player Thierry Henry picked up the award on Messi’s behalf. Meanwhile, Haaland and Mbappe were absent from the event as well. Haaland scored 52 goals in his City debut season, where the English team won the FA Cup, the Premier League, and the Champions League. Messi was declared the winner despite having the same points from a scoring system. The votes were determined based on fans, team captains, and journalists.

Meanwhile, Spanish and Barcelona striker Aitana Bonmati was crowned FIFA’s best player in the women’s division. Her win was a clean sweep after helping Spain win the World Cup and leading Barcelona to the Champions League in 2023.

Arevalo Sworn In As The New President Of Guatemala

On Monday,  Bernardo Arevalo was sworn in as Guatemala’s president. After a chaotic inauguration that Congress delayed to undermine his legitimacy, the anti-corruption activist took the oath. Arevalo has promised to implement broad reforms to tackle the rising cost of living and control the violence.

He won the elections in August; however, since then, Arévalo and his party have faced a series of legal challenges, fraud allegations, rallies, and riots that tried to stop him from taking office.

On Sunday, hundreds of his fans were calling on lawmakers to preserve the constitution and clashed with police outside the Congress building. However, the inauguration process went on long into the night until Arévalo took the oath of office just past midnight.

The 65-year-old is the son of a former president, a career diplomat, and a sociologist. He has positioned himself as a supporter of democracy and a figurehead of a progressive movement in a political environment where conservative parties have long dominated.

In light of record-high remittances, the government and vice president of Arevalo will have to strike a compromise between curbing migration and maintaining the local economy. This compromise will likely involve implementing policies that address the root causes of migration while also ensuring economic stability.

India Climbs To Fifth Rank In PwC’s Survey

According to PwC’s most recent poll, India was ranked fifth as a preferred destination for investments. Following the US, China, Germany, and the UK, India has climbed four spots from the previous year.

As of 2020, the nation was the fourth-most popular investment destination. However, in 2021, it suffered a drop to the sixth rank, eighth in 2022, and ninth in 2023. As per PwC’s 27th Annual Global CEO Serve, the business leader supports India’s appeal as a favourable investment destination. The nation’s commercial landscape seems promising for 2024.

Global CEOs are taking notice of India’s positive vibes, according to the CEO Survey. They indicate that there will be an increase in the workforce by 5% for the next 12 months, a sharp contrast to 2023 when they had spoken of a planned hiring freeze and headcount reduction. Apart from real estate, sectors like private equity, hospitality, and engineering will also see a rapid increase in hiring.

Despite several challenges, such as a pandemic that negatively impacted businesses across the globe, India’s GDP is expected to expand at a steady rate. Global businesses, in contrast to their optimistic Indian counterparts, are optimistic about the future as well.

London Mayor Urges Closer Ties With UK And Tolerant Immigration Policies

On Thursday, London Mayor Sadiq Khan urged for stronger relations with Europe and improved immigration policies. Khan is from the opposition Labour Party and will seek his third term in May.

He referred to Brexit as a “key contributor” to the country’s cost-of-living crisis and said that Britain’s 2020 departure from the bloc isn’t working. According to him, Brexit is not a peripheral concern of the past, and its exit is resulting in lost opportunities, business, and income. He argued for a new settlement to bolster the UK’s economy and improve living standards. In addition, he emphasised the importance of a lenient immigration policy and said that social and cultural exchanges are beneficial for the economy.

His office’s statement concluded by stating that City Hall estimates Brexit has cost the British economy £140 billion ($178 billion) and London’s economy has dropped by £30 billion (7.5%).

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for PM Sunak said the nation’s economy has grown much faster than Italy’s and Germany’s since 2016 and promised to reduce regular immigration to historic lows and to halt asylum seekers from France from attempting to cross the channel in small boats.

22 million-year-old lost forest of Panama Canal Resurfaces

Researchers from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute have discovered a 22 million-year-old mangrove forest on Barro Colorado Island. The mysterious forest reportedly vanished from the earth due to a massive volcanic eruption in the Panama Canal. This catastrophe destroyed the forest but kept the fossils intact, with its silica-rich waters preventing decomposition.

The forest consisted of Sonneratioxylin barrocoloradoensis mangrove species, which grew to a height of 82 feet, and the tallest specimen could grow up to 131 feet which easily outspace the modern mangrove forests in height. The 121 fossilised wood specimens were found on the island, along with the mangrove forest, whose wood anatomy indicates its similarity to Southeast Asian mangroves. Sedimentary samples taken from the island show that ancient mangroves flourished in a setting where fresh and sea waters mixed.

The missing forest dates back to the early Miocene Epoch, approximately 23 million years ago. Intense volcanic activity was present in central Panama during this time when the region was a long, narrow peninsula that was separated from South America yet connected to North America.

The researchers published a study documenting their discovery in the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, and Palaeoecology.

Ayushman Bharat Scheme Hits 30 Crore Health Insurance Card Milestone

The BJP’s flagship health insurance scheme, Ayushman Bharat, has surpassed 30 crore beneficiary cards. The National Health Authority launched the AB-PMJAY (Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana), which offers secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation coverage worth Rs. 5 lakh per household annually.

According to government data, Uttar Pradesh tops the list with the highest number of AB beneficiary cards, with 4.8 crore holders. Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are next on the list, with 3.78 crore and 2.39 crore AB beneficiary card users, respectively. It has confirmed more than one crore Ayushman card holders in eleven states as of January 12.

As per the Health Ministry, gender equity is a fundamental component of the scheme’s design, as women have been issued nearly 14.6 crore Ayushman cards.

The Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY card safeguards underprivileged families from the financial burden of illness and has emerged to represent equity and empowerment.

In addition, it has made possible 6.2 crore hospital admissions, saving these families Rs. 1.25 lakh crore in additional expenses. The cost of these treatments would have more than doubled to roughly Rs. 79,157 crores without the scheme’s assistance.
