Delhi Government to Solarise 1,000 Buildings, Targeting 55 MW of Green Energy

The Delhi government has announced a major renewable energy plan to increase the usage of solar electricity throughout the city. Officials confirmed that solar panels will soon be put on roughly 1,000 government buildings, with the project estimated to generate approximately 55 megawatts (MW) of sustainable energy when completed.

The solar panels will cover a wide range of public facilities, including hundreds of schools, more than 40 fire stations, 24 Delhi Jal Board offices, and over 70 Municipal Corporation of Delhi buildings. This action is estimated to save over ₹50 crore in annual electricity expenditures and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 46,000 tonnes annually.

According to sources, the Delhi government has made rooftop solar installation mandatory for all government buildings larger than 500 square metres. More than 1,200 of the 3,880 buildings recognised as suitable have already been equipped with solar plants.

Last month, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched the project at an event in Rithala, northwest Delhi, where she opened a 25 KW solar plant at a sewage treatment facility. She stressed that the work would be done by January of next year, marking a significant milestone in Delhi’s renewable energy initiative.
