Four-wheeler electric vehicle registrations in India increased by 11% in August, as the festive season began with the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi, according to Vahan data released on September 5. Registrations increased to 17,029 units in August from 15,389 in July, indicating consistent consumer demand in the market.
Tata Motors maintained its dominance in the electric four-wheeler market, followed by JSW MG and Mahindra Electric Automobile. Hyundai and BYD India were placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Tata Motors and Mahindra experienced favourable growth, while other manufacturers saw declines.
Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, which offers models like the Nexon, Punch, and Tiago, saw a 15% growth in volume. Mahindra’s EV portfolio, which includes the XUV400 EV, XUV 9e, and BE 6, increased by 21%. In contrast, JSW MG’s Windsor and Comet declined 8%, Hyundai’s Creta decreased 5%, and BYD India’s Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7, and eMAX 7 dropped 12%.
A Tata Motors spokesperson stated that July and August were record months for EV sales, indicating increased customer trust and India’s shift towards sustainable mobility.
According to industry experts, festive buying sentiment, new model launches and government schemes like FAME-II and PM-E-DRIVE all supported the growth.
