India won the second Test against England by 336 runs at Edgbaston in Birmingham, its first Test victory at the venue and 1-1 in the five-match series. India set a challenging target of 608 runs, led by captain Shubman Gill’s remarkable performance of 269 and 161 in both innings.
Gill, 25, became the fourth-youngest Indian captain to win a Test and beat Virat Kohli’s record for the most runs scored by an Indian captain in a single Test, with 430. He also broke Sunil Gavaskar’s aggregate record for India and became the first player in Test history to register a 250 and a 150 in the same game.
Akash Deep took ten wickets for 187 runs and proved crucial in England’s defeat by 271. Jamie Smith offered resistance for England with a quick 184, the greatest score by an England wicketkeeper in Tests, reaching his century in 80 balls.
However, England lost six batsmen for a duck in the first innings, resulting in an unwelcome collapse. Gill became only the fifth player to score double centuries in both Tests and ODIs, sealing his place among India’s best.
