Preparations for the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi are on track, with Mondo track installation at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, according to Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) President Devendra Jhajharia. The event, to be held from September 27 to October 5, marks India’s debut as host of the prestigious competition.
Jhajharia confirmed that 95% of the track-laying work has been finished, with the base down and Mondo surfacing started. After the construction is completed, World Athletics officials will inspect and certify the site. The event will feature para-friendly facilities, including 100 specially designed DTC buses and seating space for 500 wheelchairs.
A record 107 countries have confirmed their participation, exceeding previous editions. The Indian contingent will also be the highest ever, with over 100 athletes compared to 40 in the last event in Kobe, Japan. In 2024, Kobe will welcome 1,073 paraathletes from 103 nations.
The PCI has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to launch the championships, highlighting his consistent support for parasports. India is hoping for a top-five finish and more than 17 medals, following its sixth-place performance last year. Defending champion Sumit Antil is among the top medal prospects. contenders.
