India Targets Top Five Sporting Nations Status by 2047, Says Mandaviya

India aims to become one of the world’s top five sporting nations by 2047, the centenary of its independence. Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Labour and Employment, Youth Affairs, and Sports, announced while inaugurating the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad.

He stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has made significant progress in sports, with changes focused on improving infrastructure, increasing athlete development, and assuring effective governance. He noted that India has formally bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games and expressed optimism that the country will enter the top ten sporting nations within the next decade.

Dr. Mandaviya discussed numerous projects, including the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, which exposes elite athletes to worldwide training standards and offers financial aid to improve performance. He also announced the implementation of a new Sports Policy centred on sports science, modern facilities, and more access for young talent.

The minister emphasised the significance of the Sports Governance Bill, which was recently introduced in Parliament and aims to establish an athlete-first framework and increase women’s participation in national federations. He praised Ahmedabad’s successful organisation of the championship, saying it showed India’s growing worldwide reputation.
