Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, lifting a total of 193 kg. The Indian weightlifter delivered a record-breaking performance to comfortably top the podium.
The 31-year-old lifted 88 kg in the snatch and 105 kg in the clean and jerk to secure first place in her category. Competing in front of the home crowd, Chanu showed strong form and control throughout the event, underlining her return to competitive weightlifting.
This was Chanu’s first competition since finishing fourth at the Paris Olympic Games in August last year. The championship also marked her debut in a new weight category after moving down from the 49 kg class, which has been removed from the Olympic programme.
Chanu’s gold medal performance is seen as an important step in her comeback and preparation for upcoming international events. Officials said her showing at the championships reflects her experience and consistency at the highest level.
Mirabai Chanu is one of India’s most successful weightlifters, having won medals at the Olympics, World Championships, and Commonwealth Games. Her latest victory adds another major title to her career and boosts India’s medal tally at the championships.
