Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called for human values to be the centre of Artificial Intelligence (AI) development, urging greater international cooperation to deploy technology safely, responsibly and inclusively.
Addressing a session on “Ensuring a Safe, Rapid and Efficient Rollout of AI” at the G7 Summit in Evian, Modi described AI as the most transformative technology created by humanity, having the potential to revolutionise healthcare, education, governance and manufacturing sectors.
While highlighting AI’s benefits, the Prime Minister stressed that technological advancement should not be the only metric to measure success. Instead, the true measure is how effectively AI empowers ordinary people and improves their lives.
Modi outlined India’s human-centric approach to AI development through MANAV vision, emphasising the importance of maintaining human control as technology continues to evolve.
The Prime Minister raised concern about the growing risks associated with deepfakes, misinformation and online exploitation, particularly for children, noting that while AI enhances education and creativity, its impact depends on the values and governance frameworks guiding its use.
Modi said no nation can be secure in cyberspace unless all nations are secure, reiterating India’s view that cyberspace should be treated as a global public good.
To promote responsible AI development, he proposed safety-first AI systems, common global standards and testing frameworks, stronger international cooperation against cyber fraud and misinformation, and wider access to AI technologies for developing countries.
Concluding his remarks, Modi said that AI should help everyone and promote shared progress instead of increasing the already existing inequalities, reaffirming India’s commitment to working with global partners on responsible and people-centric AI development.
