Indonesia’s Karawang EV Battery Hub to Create 8,000 Jobs, Boost Economic Growth

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya expects Indonesia’s largest integrated electric vehicle battery ecosystem in Karawang District, West Java, to create 8,000 direct jobs. President Prabowo Subianto opened the ANTAM-IBC-CBL consortium’s project in Artha Industrial Hills in Karawang.

Wijaya stated that the project might also provide 35,000 indirect jobs while considerably benefiting the local economy. He noted that the launch reflects the president’s commitment to advancing industrial development along the value chain, with six sub-projects already underway in Karawang and East Halmahera. President Subianto emphasised that national growth is dependent on translating natural resources into high-value products to increase wealth.

Covering 3,023 hectares and valued at $5.9 billion, the project is part of Indonesia’s National Strategic Projects. It was designed with environmental considerations, utilising a variety of energy sources such as steam, gas, waste heat, and solar electricity.

The Karawang project, run by PT Contemporary Amperex Technology Indonesia Battery (CATIB), encompasses 43 hectares and aims for an initial capacity of 6.9 GWh, which will be increased to 15 GWh with commercial operations scheduled for late 2026.
