The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has inaugurated a modern space laboratory at Mechuka Government Higher Secondary School in Arunachal Pradesh’s Shi-Yomi district, a significant step towards expanding access to space science education. The facility, known as the Pasang Wangchuk Sona ISRO Space Laboratory, was officially launched by Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona in collaboration with the Muskaan Foundation.
The laboratory has been set up to provide students with direct exposure to advanced scientific tools and hands-on experience in space science and technology. Its goal is to nurture innovation, increase curiosity, and inspire rural students to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. By offering such opportunities in a remote area like Mechuka, USRO aims to reduce the educational divide between urban and rural regions.
The facility is dedicated to Pasang Wangchuk Sona, father of the Education Minister, in recognition of his contributions and belief in the transformative role of education. According to officials, this effort is intended to encourage young people from border communities to seek professions in space research, aerospace engineering, and scientific innovation.
This initiative is part of ISRO’s larger objective to increase scientific literacy and create a strong pool of future scientists across India.
