Jannik Sinner, the world number one, went to the Wimbledon semifinals with a straight-set victory over American Ben Shelton. Sinner won 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4, displaying solid serves and consistent forehands while wearing a white sleeve over his taped right elbow.
The Italian injured his elbow in his fourth-round encounter against Grigor Dimitrov, but he exhibited little discomfort against Shelton. Sinner, the runner-up at the French Open last month, had an MRI and was limited to a short indoor practice session before his quarterfinal match.
Sinner controlled the match, winning 27 of 29 first-serve points in the first set and taking a significant lead in the tiebreaker due to Shelton’s blunders. Shelton had two break points in the second set, but Sinner recovered with a forehand winner and a 132 mph serve to deny any further opportunities. Sinner maintained his composure despite a brief period of difficulty while returning a 141-mph serve.
The Italian finished with 33 wins and 50 of 56 first-serve points. Sinner has now won six consecutive matches against Shelton and will face Novak Djokovic or Flavio Cobolli in the All England Club semifinals.
