The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) has provided rooftop solar installations to 16.78 lakh families in India, with over ₹9,280 crore in Central Financial Assistance disbursed to beneficiaries, according to a government report to Parliament on Tuesday.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has been implementing the project across the country since February 2024, to provide rooftop solar systems to one crore residential families by 2026-27. The effort aims to increase sustainable energy adoption, reduce reliance on conventional electricity sources, and reduce household power expenses.
Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, announced in the Rajya Sabha that the initiative has reached nearly 17% of its target households by August 5, 2025, just 18 months after its launch.
The PMSG: MBY replaced the previous Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme Phase-II, which had been in operation since March 2019 and was initially extended until March 2026. The change aims to streamline resources, accelerate implementation, and provide financial incentives for rooftop solar adoption.
The government expects the scheme to play an important part in fulfilling India’s renewable energy goals and contributing to environmental sustainability while providing citizens with long-term economic benefits.
