Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened Kartavya Bhavan, a crucial milestone in the Central Vista redevelopment initiative. This newly constructed structure is the first of ten Common Central Secretariat buildings designed to consolidate government offices from diverse ministries. The government plans to finish all ten structures within the next two years.
Kartavya Bhavan will house offices for several key ministries, including Home Affairs, External Affairs, Rural Development, MSME, and Petroleum and Natural Gas. This building will additionally include the Principal Scientific Adviser’s and the Department of Personnel and Training’s offices.
The Central Vista project has already completed major components like the new Parliament Building and the Vice President’s Enclave. Rajpath, the ceremonial boulevard, has also been renovated and renamed Kartavya Path.
Two more secretariat buildings are anticipated to be completed by next month, with more planned until 2026. The next phase of the project involves the development of the Executive Enclave, which will house the Prime Minister’s Office, Cabinet Secretariat, National Security Council Secretariat, and India House.
A few heritage structures, like the National Museum, National Archives, and Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan, will be retained. Meanwhile, outdated government buildings like Shastri Bhawan and Udyog Bhawan will be temporarily vacated for redevelopment.
