Saudi Arabia to Double Transport Sector’s GDP Contribution with Major Expansion

Saudi Arabia has announced ambitions to considerably expand its transport and logistics network to double its contribution to the Kingdom’s GDP. Minister of Transport and Logistics Services Saleh Al-Jasser made the statement during a ministerial session titled “Shaping the Future of Transport: People, Technology, and Policy” at the Global Aviation and Maritime Transport Summit.

The Kingdom intends to expand its railway network by more than 50% and more than double the present passenger capacity at its airports. Al-Jasser highlighted Saudi Arabia’s commitment to developing an integrated transport ecosystem based on current regulations and advanced technology, while remaining people-centered. The Kingdom is building logistics zones to promote multimodal integration, to seamlessly connect transportation systems with customs and digital infrastructure.

A notable endeavour is the integrated logistics zone at Jeddah Islamic Port, which is directly connected to customs warehouses, the main ports, and air cargo facilities. The zone will soon be connected to King Abdulaziz International Airport via a rail land bridge project to improve connectivity.

These initiatives are consistent with Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which was introduced in 2021 and intends to consolidate the logistical framework and position the Kingdom as a global logistics hub.
