India Delivers Two Dorniers To Guyana

On Monday, India delivered two Dornier-228 aircraft to Guyana as part of a Line of Credit Agreement, marking a new phase in their partnership. The Indian Air Force team facilitated the delivery, initiated by diplomatic efforts led by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and High Commissioner Dr KJ Srinivasa.

This demonstrates India’s commitment to enhancing Guyana’s defence capabilities, with President Ali’s visit to HAL in 2023 being a starting point. Guyana’s government, represented by Dr Ashni K Singh, expressed gratitude for India’s support and emphasised the importance of advanced technology in national security, particularly for the Air Corps and Coast Guard.

The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson addressed the delivery as a milestone in bilateral relations, enabling connectivity, medical evacuation, and disaster response.

Guyana’s President confirmed the arrival of the planes at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, highlighting their significance for the Guyana Defence Force. Despite geographical separation, India and Guyana share colonial histories, agrarian economies, and diverse societies.

Last month, a Defence Line of Credit was established with the Caribbean region, facilitated by the Export-Import Bank of India, totalling USD 23.37 million. This agreement, which constitutes the 292nd Line of Credit overseas from Exim Bank, serves to strengthen India’s dedication to cultivating international collaborations.

Nitin Gadkari Vows To Eliminate Fuel Cars From India

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari aims to transform India into a green economy by reducing GST on hybrid vehicles and eliminating over 36 crore petrol and diesel vehicles. He asserts that achieving this vision is challenging yet feasible.

Gadkari emphasises the potential benefits: redirecting the Rs 16 lakh crore spent on fuel imports towards improving farmers’ lives, boosting rural prosperity, and creating employment opportunities for youth. While he doesn’t specify a timeline, he remains optimistic about the goal. The Finance Ministry has yet to consider a proposal to reduce the GST on hybrid vehicles to 5% and on flex engines to 12%. Biofuel promotion, according to Gadkari, could reduce India’s fuel imports.

Environmental activists commend his commitment to sustainable transportation but warn against over-dependence on fossil fuels for the production of electricity.

Gadkari has advocated for alternative fuels since 2004 and anticipates significant changes within the next five to seven years. He highlights plans by auto companies like Bajaj and Hero to produce motorcycles and autorickshaws with flex engines. Gadkari himself uses a hydrogen-powered car, witnessing the growing acceptance of electric vehicles.

He remains optimistic, asserting that the future belongs to alternatives and biofuels, a vision that is gradually gaining traction.

US And Mexico To Partner On Semiconductor Supply Chain Development

The United States and Mexico are partnering to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain, aligning with the U.S. CHIPS Act of 2022. This collaboration involves assessing Mexico’s semiconductor ecosystem, regulatory framework, and infrastructure needs. Stakeholders like state governments, educational institutions, and companies, along with Mexico’s Secretariat of Economy, will participate in this analysis.

The automotive and medical device industries will profit from this partnership, which is essential for the stability and competitiveness of the global semiconductor supply chain. It expands on already-existing structures for collaboration, including the trilateral North American Leaders Summit process and the bilateral High-Level Economic Dialogue. Additionally, it backs regional initiatives that emphasise workforce development and semiconductor competitiveness, such as the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity.

President Biden’s CHIPS Act of 2022, which provides $500 million over five years to enhance the security and diversification of the semiconductor supply chain, established the International Technology Security and Innovation (ITSI) Fund. With the help of partners and allies, this financing will enable new projects and programmes.

The U.S.-Mexico collaboration aims to reduce reliance on China and Taiwan for semiconductor technology while fostering economic growth and strategic advantages for both nations.

US And Japan To Call For Deeper Cooperation In AI And Semiconductors

Japan and the United States are all set to announce high-tech collaboration in cutting-edge domains like artificial intelligence (AI). The Asahi Shimbun newspaper first revealed the impending declaration on Saturday.

During Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s scheduled meeting with US President Joe Biden on April 10, this alliance will be viewed as a “global partnership.” As per the published report, the partnership will emphasise reinforced cooperation in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technologies.

It added that the United States and Japan are expected to create a formal framework to support AI research and development, possibly incorporating major participants in the sector like Arm, Nvidia, and Amazon, among others.

Recent aggressive steps by the US to limit Beijing’s access to breakthrough AI processors have been made against the background of increased geopolitical tensions, especially with China. By keeping China from obtaining cutting-edge US technology, which might strengthen its military capabilities, this calculated action seeks to stop that from happening.

These kinds of projects demonstrate the increasing significance of technological collaboration and strategic partnerships in the international scene, especially in the areas of high-tech innovation and security.

India Rescues Iranian Fishing Vessel Hijacked By Pirates Off Somalia

The Indian Navy successfully rescued 23 Pakistani fishermen from Somali pirates in a 12-hour operation in the Arabian Sea. Utilising coercive tactics, Indian warships intercepted the hijacked vessel FV Al-Kambar, with INS Sumedha and INS Trishul leading the mission. The Indian Navy has shown its dedication to maritime security by forcing pirates to surrender without causing any bloodshed in its second operation.

About 90 nautical miles southwest of Socotra, in response to a distress call, the Navy caught an Iranian fishing vessel that had been taken over by nine armed pirates. On March 29, the crew was securely evacuated. The Indian Navy emphasised its role in fighting piracy and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting sea lanes and mariners of all Nationalities.

By responding quickly to distress calls in the Gulf of Aden, the Indian Navy has in the past saved crew members from a cargo vessel that was under missile attack. These actions show India’s commitment to upholding international maritime laws and battling piracy in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.

The Indian Navy continues to protect ships and mariners transiting these dangerous areas by taking preventative action and making strategic interventions.

India’s Forex Reserves Jump To Record High

According to the RBI data released on Friday, India’s forex reserves surged to a record high of $642.63 billion as of March 22. It marks a fifth consecutive weekly increase. The increase amounted to $139 million during the reporting period. Fluctuations in foreign currency assets, reflecting currency valuation changes, contributed to this rise.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) actively intervenes in the forex market to stabilise the rupee against excess volatility, with the currency closing at 83.40 against the dollar on Thursday. Notably, India’s financial markets were closed on Friday due to a holiday.

In the past week, reserves escalated by $6.4 billion, following a $20 billion surge over the previous three weeks. This trend has been aided by significant foreign stock inflows of $20.7 billion in 2023 and $1.85 billion so far in 2024, as well as India’s strong economic growth, which is predicted to reach 7.6% for the year.

Moreover, India’s inclusion in global bond indexes has attracted over $10 billion in investments since late September. To prevent excessive rupee appreciation, the RBI has absorbed most of these inflows, boosting its reserves.

Currently, India’s forex reserves, inclusive of the RBI’s forward holdings, can cover imports for over 11 months, reaching a nearly two-year peak.

Virat Kohli Becomes First Indian To Register 100 Fifty-Plus Scores In T20s

Virat Kohli made history by notching his 100th fifty-plus score in T20 cricket, a feat unmatched by any other Indian player and achieved by only two others globally. During the IPL match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kohli’s outstanding 77 off 49 balls, including 11 boundaries and two sixes, highlighted his return to form after a previous disappointing performance.

Throughout his brilliant 378-match T20 career, Kohli has accumulated 12,092 runs at an average of 41.26, adorned with eight hundred and 92 fifties. His best score to date is an undefeated 122. Australia’s David Warner (109) and the West Indies’ Chris Gayle (110) are two of the finest players with the most fifty-plus scores.

Batting first, PBKS failed to build on their beginnings and finished at 176/6. Glenn Maxwell (2/29) and Mohammed Siraj (2/26), of the RCB bowling team, made significant strides. Kohli’s starring performance and late-inning heroics from Dinesh Karthik (28*) and Mahipal Lomror (17*) saw RCB secure a four-wicket victory with four balls remaining, despite mistakes in their chase.

Rohan Bopanna-Matthew Ebden Advance To Miami Open Quarterfinals

Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna, alongside his Australian partner Matthew Ebden, showcased their skill at the Miami Open, securing a hard-fought victory against Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski, propelling them into the men’s doubles quarterfinals. The formidable duo endured a challenging battle lasting one hour and thirty-nine minutes before clinching a 7-5, 7-6 (3) win over Monaco’s Nys and Poland’s Zielinski in the ATP Masters 1000 event on Monday night.

Despite facing formidable opposition, the 43-year-old Bopanna and Ebden exhibited remarkable resilience and skill throughout the match. With four aces and 84% first serve points won their partnership demonstrated their dominance on the court, highlighting their daunting presence in the men’s doubles circuit.

It was Bopanna and Ebden who seized a crucial opportunity, breaking Nys and Zielinski in the 11th game to claim a pivotal lead and subsequently secure the opening set. In the second set, neither team yielded serve until the match reached a climactic tiebreaker. A double blunder by Nys and Zielinski proved costly at an important point, allowing the Indo-Australian pair to take advantage of the mistake and win the set and the match.

John Patrick Smith of Australia and Sem Verbeek of the Netherlands will be their next opponents.

Beyond his personal achievements, Karthik was beneficial in ensuring that RCB defeated PBKS by four wickets.

Virat Kohli’s exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Match accolade, yet Karthik’s invaluable contribution cannot be understated.
