Delhi on track to become EV capital with about 8,000 e-buses by 2026: Minister

Delhi plans to firmly establish itself as India’s leading electric vehicle centre by significantly expanding its electric bus fleet, says Transport Minister Pankaj Singh. The city now operates 3,400 electric buses, a huge increase from 400 when Singh took office. By the close of this year, the number is expected to reach approximately 6,000, as part of a broader initiative to replace older diesel vehicles.

Singh stated at the India Clean Transportation Summit 2025, hosted at the India International Centre, that Delhi “requires 7,000 to 8,000 electric buses” following route rationalisation, to meet this target by February 2026.

Singh emphasised that the extension will include the city’s Devi bus service to improve last-mile connectivity. He added that the forthcoming EV Policy 2.0, which is expected to be presented in February, will place a strong emphasis on charging infrastructure. Plans are ongoing to install charging stations in residential complexes, beneath flyovers, and on underutilised land in Delhi’s outer areas.

To accelerate the infrastructure deployment, the government will work with Resident Welfare Associations and explore public-private partnership approaches. Policy measures being considered include incentives, adjustments to road tax, and the scrapping of older vehicles.
